People who are aware of the inter-connectedness of life are more likely to practice, feel and express gratitude than those who think achievements come from one’s own efforts. Those who recognize a benefit and never take that benefit for granted are able to express gratitude. People who express gratitude tend to have more and stronger personal relationships. They are psychologically and physically healthier. They also tend to be more empathetic and less angry. A gratitude attitude reduces stress and builds self-esteem. It is said that after Buddha obtained enlightenment while sitting under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India he sat for seven more days paying homage to the tree that had given him shelter. He was grateful for the shade the tree provided.

If we stop to think for a moment about the inter-connectedness of our own body, we will find much to be grateful for including our skin. It acts as a 24-hour barrier against the elements, bacteria and viruses. It regulates body temperature and gives us physical sensations through a network of nerve cells. In an interview with WebMD Karen Mallin, a doctor of psychology (PsyD), said, “A lot of nerve endings are connected to the skin, which wraps around the organs, so as emotions are played out neurologically, they can be expressed through the skin …”

By reducing stress and fostering well being, a daily dose of gratitude may influence your skin health. Here are a few of our favorite quotes on gratitude to uplift your emotions and bring awareness of the benefits of expressing gratitude.
