Why YASOU Natural Skin Care Does Not Add SPF to its Cellular Face Cream

YASOU natural skin care makes a conscious choice not to add SPF in our cellular day cream. Here are some reasons for why we made this decision.

1) YASOU cellular day cream is a water-based skin care product that works on a cellular level. That means it penetrates beyond the skin’s outer layer.

2) We want to keep the ingredients clean so they can enter the inner layers of the skin and do their job keeping skin healthy, smooth and resilient.

3) We believe that SPF should be the last layer of the skin care regime. To be effective against UVA and UVB rays, sunscreen must be reapplied every two hours. That’s right, sunscreen protection wears out after two hours. Who wants to reapply a face cream every two hours? That is not practical. For all day facial protection we recommend applying a powder sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

4) During testing we found that putting SPF in our day cream made the texture uneven. We like a smooth glide that provides a good tactile experience.

5) SPF is in so many products now. Read your ingredient labels and make a decision on which product with SPF you like and which is practical for your lifestyle.

Mothering Lessons From Season to Season

Just as trees, flowers, soil and water change from season to season so does a mother. Nobody can tell you how to be a mother. It’s a part of you that manifests itself in little ways each day. Whether you had a great role model in your own mom, or not, have read books by baby and parenting experts, mothers can look to the natural world and their own natural essence for insight and respite.

Winter
A tree in winter may look ugly and bare but its branches will soon grow buds, leaves, and fruit. Every situation will change. Fall
Fall is a time of letting go. The tree sheds its leaves with a bright canopy of color. As mothers know, letting go is part of the job. Birds, bears, fish and other members of the animal kingdom know instinctively when its time to let go. But it’s sometimes hard for moms. I read a story by Madeleine Albright, the first woman to become U.S. Secretary of State, about when her overprotective mother sent her away to a Swiss boarding school at the age of 10. Ms. Albright cried all the way there (her mother probably did too). But of that year away, she wrote: “I learned French, I learned to ski, I learned to be in a place that I wasn’t at all comfortable in, and I had to make it comfortable for myself. Natural Wellness Skincare Tips for Teenagers

When children grow into their teen years they become more conscious of their appearance, including their skin. What they learn now about natural skincare can become a life-long wellness practice. Here are some ideas for teenagers to help them sustain healthy skin naturally and prevent or properly manage skin irritations such as acne.

Cleansing and moisturizing routines are key. They may differ depending on whether the skin is normal, oily, dry or a combination skin type. Determine yours and read on. Other factors influencing skin health that we can control are diet and protection from the sun’s UV rays.

Identify Skin Type
Identifying skin type (which may fluctuate with the seasons and hormone levels) is important to caring for your skin.

Normal skin appears smooth and clear. It maintains a natural balance of oil and water. Wash your face with a mild soap two to three times a day. The body’s natural oils prevent water loss.

Oily skin may appear shiny. It shows open pores and is acne prone. Use soap and water three times a day to keep the face clean. Don’t touch or squeeze pimples. Avoid any products that clog the pores. Tanning the skin will not improve acne it may actually worsen it.

Dry skin looks dull. Moisturizing is important after a twice-daily wash. Natural moisturizers containing Shea butter and olive oil help lock in moisture. Do not use products that contain fragrance or alcohol, which can make the skin drier. Avoid scrubbing. Such action on the skin’s surface can make it drier.

Combination skin on a teenager may have areas that are dry and areas that are oily. You can remove excess oil by washing three times a day with soap and water. Use a moisturizer on the dry areas only.

Cleanse
Oil, dirt and sweat accumulate on the face. Wash it away at least twice a day, preferably in the morning and evening after brushing teeth. Use warm water and mild soap or a foaming facial cleanser. Don’t shock the pores with hot or cold water while washing.

During the day, avoid touching your face with your fingers. Bacteria can spread causing pores to clog and inflame. Keep hands, eyewear and hair clean for this same reason. Pay attention to the forehead, nose and chin area.

Hydrate
After cleansing, hydrate with a moisturizer containing all natural ingredients. A moisturizer is especially important for those with dry skin. Body moisture moves from inside the skin’s deepest layers to its outer layers. Lock it in with a good natural moisturizer.

Eat Well, Avoid Sun Exposure
Refined sugars and processed foods fuel inflammation. Skin needs fresh, healthy food just as our other organs do. Forego the soft drinks and replenish with a nice cool drink of water.

A few years ago a UK-based greeting card company conducted a research study to identify some of the pearls of wisdom our mothers pass on to us. After studying 2,000 adults their findings showed that we not only listen to mom while growing up but we hold onto her wisdom as adults and pass it on to the next generation. So if you catch yourself sounding like your mother, there is a good reason for that. Some of the most common bits of shared wisdom are “Always try your best” and “Get an education, no one can take that away from you.”

Mom advice covers the gamut of how to live a happy and productive life. She may have shared her thoughts on education, food/eating, finances, respect, and etiquette. But does mom’s advice still hold up under the changing role of motherhood? In 2012, the Pew Research Center reported that twenty percent of children lived in a two-parent home with a stay-at-home mother compared with forty percent in 1970. Statistics on breastfeeding, discipline, childcare, and mommy guilt along with the groundswell of sources of information including the Internet and social media may steer you to think that a lot has changed. It has and it hasn’t. “Stay true to yourself,” “Respect others” and “Save money” have been, and still are, good pieces of advice.

Balance Your Skin pH Level Naturally

Healthy skin has a pH balance of 5.5. When its acid-alkaline ratio (pH) deviates from that you may be exposing your skin to unhealthy elements including bacteria and pollutants. Keeping the skin’s pH level balanced invites moisture in and keeps contaminants out.

Anti-aging skin care products work more effectively when your skin’s pH level is balanced. If the skin’s outer layer is compromised it’s harder for the anti-aging ingredients to penetrate it.

Time for a Mother Daughter Skincare Talk

Proper skincare should be one of the things mothers and daughters and even grandmothers should take time to talk about. The wisdom of cross-generational experiences, concerns, and observations can often be very helpful. The key is to listen to each other, share experiences, talk about concerns in an encouraging and supportive way, and offer observations only if asked.

With those ground rules, let the conversation about skincare begin. You can start with these questions but feel free to add or ignore as you see fit. I’m including some answers we got from mothers and daughters on an informal survey we conducted.

The only advice I got from my mom about skincare was […fill in the blank]. But times have changed and I think we can do better than that.

Our survey showed that older moms received very little advice from their moms except an occasional warning to stay out of the sun. One mom said: “I have no memory of skin care advice from my mom other than beware of too much sun because it makes your skin leathery.”

There are some things I feel are important for ust to share about skin care. Can we talk now?

Some of the things moms and daughters shared included information about hereditary traits, proper cleansing, moisturizing, skin problems, protecting skin from sun damage, healthy eating and exercise. Also, how skin changes as one ages. One mom shared this about aging with her daughter: “I am open to more anti-aging, natural products as I age. And certainly I use more sunscreen!”

One mom said: “I’ve talked with her about the importance of proper skincare. I’ve gotten her facials and helped her get higher quality skin care since she was around 12.”

About proper cleansing one mom wrote: “My daughter doesn’t always remove her makeup at night and we definitely go head to head about that one.”

A daughter wrote saying: “I wish my mom would consider using natural organic skincare rather than the chemical based products she uses.”

What do you credit for your complexion?

This is a good question because it lets you know how each other thinks about your skin and your approach to healthy skin. Do you owe it to something fixed like heredity or current age? Or do you attribute it to skincare products, stress, healthy eating or other lifestyle choices?

How do you define beauty?

Listen to hear if she defines beauty beyond physical characteristics. If not, share with her your definition of beauty that includes deeper values.

One mom from the survey said: “Beauty is the aura that comes from living true to who you are.” Another said: “Self-assured grace that emits from the inside out.”

Be ready to listen, because moms and daughters may have a lot to say to each other. Here is a memory one mom shared:

“My mom did something wonderful for me. She bought me a makeup lesson and facial when I was 13. She thought I was a little heavy handed on the blue eye shadow. I learned about skincare and how to apply makeup so I didn’t look like a hooker!”

Skincare can be a topic that brings moms and daughters together in a special way. This mom used it as a bridge for bonding.

“My daughter and I have gotten massages and facials together. It’s a bonding moment that we share a couple of times a year. Somewhat so that she takes care of her skin, but mostly so that she knows how important it is to manage self care and treat herself like a queen sometimes, even if no one else does. We all deserve some pampering.”

4 Reasons to Read Skin Care Labels

Before putting any skin care product on your body, read the label. You may trust the product’s reputation or be lured by beautiful packaging, but reading skin care labels will tell you what ingredients are included, if it is recyclable; where it was packaged, manufactured or distributed, and proper usage. One or all of these things might matter to you in a significant way. Take a few minutes before buying and make reading skin care labels a good habit.

What ingredients does it contain?
The list of ingredients should matter to everyone, not just those with sensitive skin or people prone to allergic reactions. If you are looking for a particular benefit from the skin care product, such as moisturizing properties, look for ingredients known to moisturize (Aloe vera, Olive oil, Shea butter). If you want to avoid synthetics (petroleum/chemical based) ingredients look for botanicals containing plant-based nutrients(Calendula (Extract).

The order in which ingredients are listed is important. The highest concentrations are listed first, and than anything 1% and under. The 1% and under ingredients do not have to be listed in any order. The right amount of active ingredients in the skin care product is essential to get the results you are looking for.

Is it recyclable?
If you want eco-friendly skin care products that won’t harm the environment during production, use, and disposal, read the label. Overcrowded landfills may be one concern of yours but also think about what you are washing down the drain everyday. Do not dispose of nail polish, polish remover, or medication in your sinks. Water systems and the life that depends on it may be affected. Clogged pipes are another reason for not washing toxins down the sink.

Packaging and containers for lip balm, soaps, lotions, body wash, shaving cream and hand lotion are just some of the materials that can be recycled. Look for “recyclable” on the label.

Where does it come from?
Where a skin care product is packaged, manufactured, or distributed may be another concern. Some people want only products made in the U.S.A. Some don’t want to invest in products from countries that don’t adhere to stringent quality controls, decent wages for their workers, or environmental controls. If these things are important to you look at how and where the product is manufactured.

What is the proper usage?
Who knows better than the manufacturer how the product is best used? Some times you can find some great skin care tips. Look to see if there are any warnings about use.
