An Intro to Sustainable Beauty

Clean or sustainable beauty means that the products are safe for people and the planet, using only non-toxic ingredients for active results. It means a brand is committed to ethical ingredient sourcing and partners with suppliers that practice similar ethics of production of their ingredients, as well as practicing fair trade when applicable.

Sustainability and ethical beauty is growing in importance as climate change is becoming one of our top priorities in today’s world.

You may wonder what to look for in finding a sustainable brand.  A few things we recommend to start with include:

  1. Is the brand vegan?
  2. Is the brand non-toxic?
  3. Is the brand natural/organic?
  4. Does the brand practice recycling? (zero waste)
  5. Does the brand give back?
  6. Are they palm oil free and if not are they using RSPO-certified palm oil? RSPO- certified palm oil comes from farmers who farm palm trees specifically for palm oil usage.

As the founder of YASOU “A toast to your health” skin care, it has always been important to me to become educated in ways that elevate YASOU as a brand that cares not only for our customers well-being but also for our Earths.

As a brand we check off all of the list above and recently have eliminated our outside packaging for our hydrating body creams and our vegan hand creams.  For our hydrating body creams we have moved from recyclable plastic containers to recyclable glass. Even the frosted technique on the glass is created from recycled paint. We have started a refill program for our 13oz hydrating body cream glass tubs. When you are finished with your cream, gently hand wash the 13oz glass tub, and then make sure it is completely dry before returning it to us. We will sanitize it, and refill it giving you an additional 15% OFF the retail price of your purchase.

By participating in a refill product/program you prevent 70% on CO2  (Carbon Dioxide), save 65% on energy, and 45% on water according to research conducted by The LCA Centre. Some interesting and important statistics wouldn’t you say?

Stuart Landesberg, co-founder and Ceo of Grove Collaborative said: “If packaging can be reused, there will be a huge reduction in the amount of waste that’s created. This is going to be a big part of the future.”  We agree!

The future of beauty is sustainability!

If you are a Chicagoan, here is a recommendation for you when looking for sustainable products.
